It’s the No. 1 question we get asked from clients – “What do I wear?!?”
Choosing your wardrobe for your brand session might be easier than you think! Here are 4 best practices that will help you decide what to wear in your brand photos.
Tip #1: Start with the vibe, decide on looks, then let branding be your guide
We all have a vibe. Some have a more easy, laid back vibe and some are a little more structured and put together. Some people like clothes that feel lived in and effortless, while others lean more towards tailored and classic clothing. Whatever your vibe (and the vibe of your business), let that help in deciding your clothing choices.
Once you’ve landed on the vibe, aim for three different looks that will highlight three aspects of your business. The three looks we always recommend are:
- client-facing
- behind the scenes
- casual or lifestyle
Finally, let your branding guide you all the way. What are your brand colors? Does it make sense to wear clothes in one or two of those colors? Do you prefer to dress in neutrals so that your brand colors are shown in the surroundings or in props? Keeping your brand colors in mind will help you stay focused on what you should wear and what you should stay away from. Looking for brand help in general? Tip #2: Accessorize on-brand
Stay true to the vibe and keep accessories on brand. If your vibe is minimalistic and straight forward, keep your jewelry to a minimum, too. If your brand is bold, colorful and energetic, let your accessories reflect that. The same is true for other types of accessories, like glasses, hats, scarves, belts and sunglasses. If it makes sense to have photos of you wearing various accessories for different looks, by all means, bring them!

Tip #3: Maximize your looks with options
Get the most bang for your buck by bringing options for each of your looks. A blazer or jean jacket worn for a client-facing image can easily be removed for a behind the scenes shot. The same is true in reverse: dress up a casual jeans and t-shirt look with a blazer or swap the jeans for a skirt.
Also keep the seasons in mind when you’re bringing options for tops. A cardigan or chunky sweater in one of your less dominant brand colors paired with jeans and a t-shirt could also be a great addition to help round out your looks while giving you longevity with your imagery. We might be the only ones who think this way, but posting photos of us in t-shirts when it’s freezing outside just doesn’t make sense.

Tip #4: Get everyone on the same page
Will any associates or team members be included in the brand shoot? If so, make sure they know what (and more importantly, what not) to wear. No one wants to be that person who shows up to shoot day in bright fuchsia when the rest of the team is in soft muted tones. Be clear with your team on what they can wear in the images, letting your brand vibe and colors dictate this for you. Decide ahead of time how many looks the team will need, and then spell out exactly who’s going to be wearing what. And always have them bring a few options to have on hand, just in case.
