Let’s talk about the difference between a photo that says, “Hi, I exist,” and one that says, “Here’s what I stand for — and here’s why you’ll love working with me.”
Yes, your Instagram profile pic or LinkedIn headshot matters. And yes, in those photos you should absolutely look approachable and professional.
However, if that is the only visual your audience sees, then we’ve got work to do.
Don’t worry — we’re not talking about “work to do” in a dramatic way. Instead, think more along the lines of a “let’s bring this into alignment” approach. (That feels better, right?)
For creative, women-owned businesses — whether here in Charlotte or somewhere equally lovely — understanding the difference between professional headshots and brand photography can completely change how you show up online.
What Is a Professional Headshot?
Ah, the professional headshot. What a lovely introduction!
Technically speaking, a professional headshot is typically a clean, simple, waist-up portrait of you looking at the camera. The focus is solely on you — not your environment, your tools, or any particular activity.

Vibe-wise, think of headshots as the handshake: the appetizer, the “nice to meet you.”
They are perfect for profile pics, email signatures, speaker bios, press features, social media introductions, and business cards.
They put a face to your name.
They build that all-important know-like-trust factor.
They help someone feel like you’re a real human (kind of important!).
Even so, headshots don’t explain how you think, show how you work, or communicate what it actually feels like to collaborate with you. And that’s where the real distinction begins.
(Lean in for a moment, because this part matters.)
Headshots identify you — but they don’t position you.
Moreover, for the creative woman who’s quietly building something powerful behind the scenes yet feels like her visuals are stuck in 2019, that distinction matters more than she might realize.
In short: positioning matters.
What Is Brand Photography?
Brand photography is where strategy meets story. In fact, it goes far beyond a single portrait.
Personal brand photography, on the other hand, tells the full story of how you work, what you value, and what it truly feels like to collaborate with you. In other words, it’s where we move from “What do I do with my hands?” to “Wait… this actually feels like me.”
By definition, brand photography is a collection of lifestyle imagery, which often includes a combination of headshots, environmental portraits, working shots, and detail images designed for all facets of your website, social media, and marketing.

Brand images show:
- your process
- your energy
- your environment
- your leadership
As a result, they give your audience clarity. Clarity builds trust, and trust builds bookings.

For creative, women-owned businesses who are growing, pivoting, or leveling up — brand photography becomes less about “having pictures” and more about having tools.
While beautiful photos are wonderful, it’s the ones you know exactly how to use that create the real magic (and ROI).
Here’s Why It Matters (Especially in a Saturated Market)
You are a creative entrepreneur, and you’re doing incredible work. (Trust us — we get it. We see it in our clients, and we are living it ourselves.)
However, online, things move fast: everyone gets about three seconds. Since your audience is smart, they’re scanning quickly — and deciding even faster.
At the same time, when your imagery doesn’t reflect the level of work happening behind the scenes, it creates a disconnect. Even if your audience can’t articulate it, they still sense it.
Fortunately, strategic and aligned visuals remove that friction. Not only do they help your audience understand who you are, but they also communicate why you’re the right choice. In other words, they quietly convey:
- she knows what she’s doing
- she’s intentional
- she’s established
- she is worth it
Ultimately, that’s not ego. That’s positioning.
So…Do I Need Headshots Or Brand Photography?

The short answer is yes — but it’s not “either-or.” You need both.
The good news is that with brand photography, it’s a two-birds-one-stone situation: Brand photography includes headshots. Headshots alone don’t tell your brand’s full story.
When Should You Refresh Your Headshots or Your Brand Imagery?
We get this question constantly. Even so, the answer isn’t one-size-fits-all, and it’s certainly not about chasing trends. Ultimately, it’s about alignment.
Update Your Professional Headshots When:
- Your appearance noticeably changes
- You step into a new role or niche
- You go through a visual rebrand
- Your current headshot feels dated
For more information, check out our blog post on why you need professional headshots and when to update them here.
A professional headshot is often your first impression on social media, your website bio, speaking engagements, and media features. Therefore, if it doesn’t reflect who you are now, it’s working against you.
That said, a headshot is just the entry point.
Here’s When You Should Refresh Your Brand Photography:
The answer here is a little more nuanced. After all, brand photography deserves intention.
Updating your imagery every 6–18 months is a solid rhythm. You change, your business grows, and evolves. As such, intentionally updating your imagery at least once a year ensures that it always reflects the current version of you, your business, and your offerings.
If you aren’t already proactively scheduling at least one brand shoot each year (or something close to it), then we definitely recommend updating your brand photos whenever you:
- launch a new offer
- shift your pricing, positioning, or overall branding
- notice your website no longer reflects your level of expertise or speaks to your ideal clients
- feel slightly disconnected from your current visuals
In addition, personal brand photography should reflect:
- your current positioning
- the caliber of clients you’re attracting
- the energy you bring into your work
- the direction you’re heading next
It’s less about “new photos because it’s been a year” and more about alignment. Therefore, if your current photos feel like a past version of you… trust that instinct.
Growth deserves documentation. Growth deserves to be seen. When you’re a creative entrepreneur who’s building something meaningful, your visuals should evolve with you.
That’s exactly why Stefanie Stroman decided to do a brand refresh session last summer. Her business has evolved and her goal was to work with more luxury brands for events and services. So, she asked us to create imagery that would give Stroman Studios Calligraphy a more luxe, elevated feel.

Nailed it! Read all about Stef’s refresh session here.
